Some people are having a problem where their pad shows up as a pov switch instead of analog joystick. As of now there is no fix in this post. If you find a fix, please share info about it
If your like me, you just recently bought yourself some form of adapter to plug your playstation dance pad into your pc. Upon use, you find that you cannot hold opposite arrows, otherwise it will not register a press. After research, you find that using the up+start+select should work, but it doesn't. The rest of the internet and these forums will tell you one of two things, either buy a new pad for usb, or buy a better adapter. After searching all over the interwebs, I found a script that will fix the axis problem for any dance pad that registers as a gamepad.
NOTE: I am not the creator of these scripts. I merely am transferring them here. They were originally on a forum post of the old stepmania website, and is not longer accessible from here.
Dance games this fix may not work on:
-OpenITG
Dance games confirmed to work with this:
-StepMania 5 beta 3
Instructions:
1. Download the zip file from this link.
2. Extract the contents of the zip file somewhere easily accessible.
3. Download and install autohotkey from this website.
4. Plug in either one or two dance pads, and make sure all other gamepad devices are unplugged.
5. Run JoyKeyTest.exe
6. When prompted, insert '1' and click ok
7. Open SMAxisRemapV2.ahk in a text editor such as notepad
8. Stay off the pad, and look at the value labeled as 'x' in the window following your mouse. Insert this number in the text file next to 'J1None'
9. Now proceed to step on two opposite arrows at the same time. Again, look at the value labeled 'x' and input that into the text file next to 'J1Both'
~Steps 10-13: For dual dance pad only~
10. Exit JoyKeyTest by going to the notification area (lower right of windows), right clicking the green square with an H in it, and clicking 'exit'
11. Reopen JoyKeyTest.exe, and when prompted for input, type 2 and then click ok
12. Stay off of player pad, and look at the value labeled 'x'. Input that in the text file next to 'J2None'
13. Now step on two opposite arrows, and again look at the value labeled 'x'. Input that into the text file next to 'J2Both'
14. Save the text file, and close it and JoyKeyTest.
15. Open AutoHotKey from where it is installed. If there is no desktop shortcut, it is located in C:Program Files (x86)AutoHotKeyAutoHotKey.exe, or if Program Files (x86) does not exist, it will be in the same place but under Program Files instead.
16. Right click SMAxisRemapV2.ahk, then click Run Script
17. Open Stepmania and map the buttons. A slightly longer press may be required for it to register as a keyboard button and not a joypad axis, but once mapped correctly in Stepmania it will work perfectly in game. Simply use the audio sync setting in the options menu to make sure the timing is all accurate
It seems like a lot of steps, but that is due to me trying to explain everything well so that everyone can understand it
~EDIT~
From testing, it seems that this fix does not like to work on OpenITG. As for anything older than stepmania 5 beta 3, I do not guarantee success. If your pad will not register in game as keyboard buttons (keypad up down left right etc.), then you may want to upgrade to stepmania 5 beta 3. Also, if you do find versions that do not support this fix, please reply and I will add them to the list at the top of this post.
~EDIT: 7/28/14~
If you are using a PS to PC adapter and it shows up as a twin joystick, there may be a driver that works for you.
NOTE: To use this driver, you need to have a 32 bit operating system.
1. Download and install this driver (only need one of the downloads, uploaded to two sites for redundancy)
MegaMediaFire
2. Open control panel and navigate to game controllers (under devices and printers for newer OS's)
3. Right click 'Twin PS to PC adapter', then click gamepad settings (For winxp or older, this step is not necessary)
3. Double click on the 'Twin PS to PC adapter'
4. Under Function Test, set Mode Select to DancePad Mode.
Essentially, this fix does the same thing as the script, but it supports every dance game. Also, if you have a PS to PC adapter that has 2 controller ports, this will only support 1 pad at a time.
This fix is tested, and appears to work for any dance pad and any dance game, so long as you have a compatible PS to PC adapter and a 32 bit operating system. If you don't know what 32 bit is, then google is your friend.
These adapters are known to work with this fix:
~EDIT: 1/23/15~
The autohotkey script fix now seems to work for OpenITG. If it does not work for you, I believe I know why.
The default install location for OpenITG its in the program files folder (either Program Files or Program Files(x86) depending on if you have 32 or 64 bit OS). With the program installed there, many aspects of the game break. This includes its ability to save settings. Running it as administrator seems to fix some things, but still does not fully fix the problem. I know StepMania default installs to C:Games, so I tried installing OpenITG to that location as well. Lo and behold, the program fully functions and accepts the autohotkey fix script. Full functionality exists, even without running as administrator. I recommend installing to the new location, then moving over key folders from the previous install location (themes, songs, noteskins, data), and then finally deleting the old OpenITG folder in program files and its shortcuts on the desktop.
~EDIT: 6/8/15~
It appears there has been an update to Stepmania that will fix this automatically. It seems to not work for everyone however. I will continue to keep this up for those who either prefer to use OpenITG (like myself) or if the built in method doesn't work. Like my method, it will not work for certain pads some people seem to have that input as a HAT switch instead of an axis.
~EDIT: 12/9/15~
Apparently a fix has been found for PS3 dance pads, where the previous fixes I had usually didn't help. I haven't tested this fix yet because I don't have a PS3 dance pad. There already is a post for this by hCo, but I thought I would add it to this post as well. My plan with this post was to bring together fixes for any problem using a console pad on PC. So go say thanks on this post.
PS3 Fix Download
I will now also be creating a list of adapters that properly support dance pads and will either be plug and play or have easily accessible drivers. If updated drivers are possibly needed, links to those will be provided. Links to adapters will be to amazon.
MAYFLASH 3-IN-1 MAGIC JOY BOX | Drivers (Purchased and verified myself, drivers needed to enable dance pad support, only for PS2 pad)
Original Xbox also has support on this adapter, though you need to manually bind the device and the driver for it to detect the controller at all. But once you do, it does have a DDR mode, which I will be posting instructions on all of that sometime soon (not tonight, because I just got it working and need to head to bed). So if you do have an old original xbox pad lying around, you can also use that.

Check out my website:

In this page I am going to explain how to set up Dance Dance Revolution on your computer. You will need a dance mat of course, maybe a Playstation/USB adaptator, a software (actually, a game) and music tracks.

So how to play android apps/games with Arc Welder (Chrome Browser). Hello friends, in my previous post I explained about In this post, I will talk about how to play Android Apps/Games on PC With Arc Welder. You can test or play your android apps/games with Arc Welder in easy steps. Today’s many android apps emulator programs are available for PC (like, YouWave, GenyMotion, Jar of Beans, Android SDK, ) but Arc Welder different from these emulators because Arc Welder is not a full emulator program. It is just an android apps tester which you can install from Chrome Web Store & runs only with Chrome Browser. Arc welder download for windows 10.

The dance mat

Obviously the choice of the dance mat is very important for your in game enjoyment. This part of the website is the most questions inspiring, that is why I decided to deal with it on a dedicated page:
Rendez-vous on Dance mat reviews. Long story quick, the choice is wide with prices ranging from 15 euros to 600 euros. Beginners will most likely choose reinforced soft dance mats: they have inside them a foam layer which give them thickness, stability and damp. They are worth their 40 euros.
Old mats used to require a Playstation to USB adaptator. I have a section about that at the end of this page.

Softwares/games

The reference for Dance Dance Revolution on a computer is Stepmania.
Stepmania is an adaptation of the game DDR on PC and Mac, free, open source, and full of features. Stepmania is evolving days after days, and has a huge communauty of players. The modding possibilities of Stepmania are impressive: look of the game with alternative themes, original game modes (like the hilarious drunk option), announcer to comment on your dance, video clip and more.
Very strong point, with Stepmania you can play on a local network and even on the internet with a world ranking system, just like Starcraft and the likes!
There was a long period of mess with several competing versions of Stepmania, but the release of Stepmania 5 has well clarified the situation. This time people seems to drop the old 3.9 version and switch to this (excellent) Stepmania 5.
You can have several versions of Stepmania (or Stepmania and Dance with your Intensity) on your computer and make them share the same song library. A good way to save disk space!
Click the image below to go to my tutorial about Stepmania. You will find complete info on this software and set up tips, especially for network play.

Dance

The (vintage) alternative to Stepmania is Dance With Intensity.
I love this game because it is the one I started up with. DWI is almost as features full as Stepmania, the user interface is brilliant, the announcer is awesome. What I really miss in Stepmania is the profile handling, far superior in Dance With Intensity. Very useful if several dancers use the same computer and do not want to mix scores.
Unfortunately DWI project stopped long ago, thus it is the same game than in 2003. Since then Stepmania brought its high res graphics and multiplayer, making it the obvious choice.
If you do not care about high res, go on and give Dance With Intensity a shot. Click the picture to access my complete tutorial!

In addition to the freewares DWI and Stepmania, you can find commercial softs, like the In The Groove franchise. I know very little about it .. because I do not want to pay for it! The game is based on Stepmania, but adds several gameplay tricks like the mines, the rolls (similar to the freezes except you tap the arrow all along), the Hands (there are 3 or 4 arrows at a time thus you must use your hands).
Contrary to Stepmania and Dance with Intensity, In The Groove features a mix of songs you do not need to download on the web (after all, you paid for it). This is much like the games Dance Dance Revolution 1,2,3,.. you can buy on Playstation or play in arcade. You can not add others songs by yourself.
In The Groove was released on PC, arcade and PS2.

There is a new french player on the market called Yasd. They developped their own Stepmania clone, Feetness. This is sold for Windows, Mac and Linux at 35€ with (only) 15 playable titles. What can sell you on that option is that new titles are regularly offered for download on the website, you even get to choose the new titles through polls. Well, the songs are not offered, you pay for them.

For the sake of completeness I should talk a bit about Flash Flash Revolution which is a flash port of DDR. You play online on a website, and you can only use your keyboard, not mats. Frankly I do not see the point but you've got to satisfy everyone..
Similarly the Stepmania team has begun to test the concept of Stepmania micro which is played through a web browser with the keyboard. It is fun to see how it works, but here at DDR PC Gamer we will stay focus on dance mat playing.

Musics

Last but not least, the songs. A Dance Dance Revolution title is made of the musical file, which can be mp3 or ogg, and a text file describing the succession of arrows. The latest can be either .dwi or .sm, .dwi being accepted by both Stepmania and Dance With Intensity and .sm only by Stepmania.
In addition you can find pictures or even video clip to be displayed in the background during the play. The important thing is, all these elements must be gathered in one folder. More on that in my pages devoted to the softwares, and in the Create your DWIs section.

Pad

Stepmania and Dance With Intensity do not come with any song pre-installed; you've got to look for it on the web. To begin with, check my page Dance school out, I give a few titles direct download. Acronis backup 12.5 download. Then you should head to the Links and build your collection. New titles are released every day, you can even do yours as I explain it here!!

TV and Hi-Fi outputs

Online Dance Games

Maybe you own a big TV screen you would like to use for your DDR session, or even an overhead projector with which you could set up huge DDR parties. Good idea! But watch the image/sound/mats synchro!! Most of the time it is a bad idea to use your TV for sound output: the sound signal would go through additional electronic circuits, being delayed in the process. Instead of hitting a Perfect timing, you would end up with mediocre Good.
That's a DDR golden rule: always choose the shortest route between your computer and your ears, so plug the speakers directly to your computer. Even sound cards processing like equalizing can sometimes induce a delay. Pos software, free download with source code. Personally I own a Hi-fi receiver with HDMI input to process the sound coming from the PC and HDMI output to bring the video to the TV. Everything works nicely in this configuration. Previously I used the optical input (Toslink) which is fine too.
However, the newest versions of Stepmania lets you calibrate your audio sync so now you can make up for a not-so-perfect audio configuration. But the set up is not so easy. See Stepmania, 'calibrate audio sync'.

The adaptator (now deprecated)

Why an adaptator? A couple of years ago, most mats available were designed for the Playstation1/2. Purchasing a Playstation/USB adaptator was a must, but this is not the case anymore.
The dance mats deluxe ignition dance pad features in its 3in1 installment connectors you can directly plug into your PS2, Xbox or PC, then many mats followed this path. If you are equipping today for DDR, you should not worry about adaptators.

BEWARE! Lots of adaptators are on the market, but only one is well suited to dance mats: EMS USB 2, and you can plug two mats with it. According to the official website , other adaptators can work but I personally know only about the EMS.

Pc Dance Dance Revolution

Why this one? The trick is, directional arrows are dealt with as independent boutons, not as axis. Try to press simultaneously up and down with an axis.. does not work.

Where can I get it? On the web, as a (french) example on fl-games. Price is 16€50 plus shipping.

Metal Ddr Pad Pc

How do I have it work? EMS USB2 needs a driver, download here. Just double click the exe to set it up.
Beware: There is a little swich on the adaptator, it MUST be on 'PC' and not on 'game' or else Windows is lost. Classical trap :D
Once the driver is set up, and the adaptator plugged, check in the setting panel, game controllers that 'axis 4 button 16 joypad' appears twice. If not, check the switch,plug/unplug, or reboot.
