There are 4 versions of osppsvc.exe in the wild, the latest version being 15.0.0169.500 (win7sp1gdroobosppv2(oobla).1). It is started as a Windows Service called 'Office Software Protection Platform' with the name 'osppsvc' and described as “Enables the download, installation, and enforcement of digital licenses for Microsoft Office applications. The genuine osppsvc.exe file is a software component of Microsoft Office by Microsoft Corporation. 'Osppsvc.exe' is the Microsoft Office Software Protection Platform (OSPP) Service, first introduced with Office 2010 Service Pack 1 and now used by all versions of Office 2010, 2013, and 2016. 1) Why there is a 'Office Software Protection Platform Service'? Does it come with MAK version only? Or all version of office 2010? 2) MS Office 2010 cannot verify the license issue need to set 'Office Software Protection Platform Service' to auto start, but why the service was not set to auto start during installation?

I was using Microsoft Office 2013, because of some Technical reason I uninstalled it and tried to reinstall it again.

Before that I wanted to see how Microsoft Office 2016 is, so I installed it, as I was not having license it aborted after 90% install.

Then I tried to install Microsoft Office 2010, Failed i tried to install Microsoft Office 2013 but I got

Free Software Protection Downloads

Error 1920. Service ‘Office Software Protection Platform’ (osppsvc) failed to start’

A).I tried to start osppsvc manually after running services.msc from command prompt.

But I got this message.

Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified

File path to OSPPSVC.exe is “C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedOfficeSoftwareProtectionPlatformOSPPSVC.EXE

As the message there was no such file in above said directory. I checked on other system where Microsoft Office 2010 was installed and copied all files from that directory, Even after file copied when I tried to start I was getting same error.

Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified

When I google for the solution I found many answers, even from Microsoft experts for the problem but none solved my problem.

When install stops it was giving this Technical Error

Problem signature:

I even tried to install Office 2010 and I get the exact same issue.

B).Some said run CMD in administrator mode and run

sfc /scannow

C).Some said disable Firewall / Antivirus programs and run Microsoft setup as an Administrator.

D).I have tried changing the Log-On as for the service to be my account or Local System Account but it does not work.

E).then i tried
Changing ‘This account’ to ‘Local system account’ is useless, because after the error described above, the system somehow reverts the log on selection for Office Software Protection Platform back to ‘This account,’ with ‘Network service’ selected by default.

The better solution is to give the user account called ‘Network service’ full permissions for the appropriate folders and registry entries. Simply follow these instructions

Office Software Protection Platform Install

In Windows Explorer:

Right Click on the folder OfficeSoftwareProtection Platform from C:Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft Shared and Microsoft from C:Program data(hidden folder) Properties > Security > Edit > Add > Type Network Service > OK > Check the Full control box > Apply and OK.

F).In Registry Editor (regedit.exe):

Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTAppID registry >Right Click on the folder > Permissions > Add > Type NETWORK SERVICE > OK > Check Full Control > Apply > OK

G).I have tried creating new user as Administrator and install, still I faced same issue.

H).Followed the steps to repair registry as below:

Step 1. Bring up Registry Editor by typing regedit in the search bar and hit Enter

Step 2. Delete the preinstalled or older registry key which block the installation of latest version or update.

Step 3. Navigate the below keys and delete it.

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice11.0

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice12.0

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice14.0

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice15.0

Step 4. Also change the DWORD values in below keys from 0 to 1 in HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOfficecommon registry folder.

I).In Services, make sure OSPPSVC is not disabled. Run CMD, enter: sc config “osppsvc” start=demand, also change start mode for osppsvc service to AUTOMATIC and rebooted the system.

J).Next I did this
Press and hold the Windows key together with the letter ‘R’. run cleanmgr and did cleaning.
Press and hold the Windows key together with the letter ‘R’.
When the Run window opens, enter the command “temp”, without quotes, and hit Enter key.
Now, you will have Explorer Window with the temporary system files location open.
Select any file or folder in the open Window and then press and hold the ‘CTRL’ and alphabet ‘A’ at once.
Microsoft Run Command Dialog For Temp
Now, right click the selected files.
While holding down the ‘Shift’ key, select the option “Delete” from the pop up menu.

K).Cleared all Browser cache and also CWindowstemp Directory

ALL ABOVE STEPS I DID TO FIX THE ISSUE. But failed

In some cases, a previously activated Microsoft Office 2010 installation may lose its activation.

Osppsvc

Reapply the MAK does not help as it loses activation immediately thereafter. Querying the Office 2010 activation status confirms it is activated, then activation is loss without explanation. Conventional methods as described via the Microsoft Technet forum link below do not work.

Free Software Protection

In this situation, the Office Software Protection Platform Service may have a corrupt tokens.dat and cache.dat which needs to be removed and the MAK re-entered.

Office Software Protection Platform Error

  1. Type in services.msc in the search box and stop the service called Office Software Protection Platform
  2. Go to C:ProgramDataMicrosoftOfficeSoftwareProtectionPlatform and rename tokens.dat to tokens.old
  3. Go to C:ProgramDataMicrosoftOfficeSoftwareProtectionPlatformCache and rename cache.dat to cache.old
  4. Restart the computer and open any Office program. You’ll be asked to retype your product key and then restart again. Again open any Office program and you may have to type in the key one more time. It will then ask you to activate online and you’re good to go.
